Hoop skating combines roller skating with on-body and off-body hula-hoop movement. It brings together rhythm, balance, object manipulation, dance, improvisation, and artistic expression.
Participants can explore foundational hoop and skating skills or develop flowing combinations that connect movement to music. No two hoop-skating styles look exactly alike. Each skater brings their own personality, movement vocabulary, and creative choices to the experience.
My teaching approach breaks skills into accessible steps while encouraging experimentation. Students are invited to adapt movements to their own abilities, build confidence gradually, and discover a style that feels natural to them.
Hello! My name is Bethany Seib. I'm an artist who loves roller skating and hula-hooping. When I was younger, I was a competitive artistic skater. Although I loved competing, my interests eventually led me in new directions.
While in college, I started hula-hooping with a group of friends. We spent our summers learning new tricks together. As I studied visual art, I also began making and selling hula-hoops while performing and teaching during the summer. Over time, I started selling hoops on the side and dancing at festivals. Eventually, people began hiring me for gigs, turning my hobby into a side career.
After getting my hands on a pair of roller skates again, I rekindled my love for skating. I started combining both skills, creating what I call HoOp Skating. What began as a fun hobby evolved into a unique form of artistic expression. I love exploring the endless possibilities of roller skating and hula-hooping, always pushing myself to learn new tricks and movements.
Today, I bring these experiences together as an artist and educator, teaching hoop skating, hoop making, movement arts, and creative STEAM workshops. I have taught hoop skating at various events throughout the country and continue to explore new ways of connecting movement, visual art, technology, music, and hands-on learning.
